Rev. Brian Tebben of Salt Lake City, Utah, is familiar with criticism of the Mormon Church. ā€œTalking to people I sometimes hear, ā€˜As soon as I drove into the valley I felt this spiritual darkness,ā€™ā€ Tebben said.

Rev. Brian Tebben with his daughter, overlooking the Salt Lake City valley.

However, he and parishioners of of Salt Lake donā€™t feel that spiritual darkness. ā€œWe see them as a people; we donā€™t just write them off as a cult,ā€ he said.

ā€œWe just donā€™t believe that territorial view of demons,ā€ said Tebben. ā€œI believe thereā€™s spiritual warfare; I just donā€™t believe itā€™s intensified in Salt Lake. Itā€™s a perception of Mormons that weā€™re trying to fight.ā€

Tebben sees Mormonism as a culture more than anything else. Locals have told him they are Mormons but that they donā€™t believe Joseph Smith was a prophet. They just want to find a church where they can worship. ā€œThat nails it on the head. Mormonism is a worldview, a mission field. We see it as a culture that weā€™re trying to reach,ā€ Tebben said.

ā€œThere are striking major theological differences [between Mormonism and Christianity],ā€ Tebben admits. ā€œThey are immense.ā€ However, the differences donā€™t prevent the church from reaching out.

Part of reaching out includes First CRCā€™s current sermon series based on . ā€œWeā€™re presenting a more Reformed view of the world,ā€ stated Tebben. ā€œGod restoring the world to the way itā€™s meant to be. The world belongs to God. Heā€™s in charge.

ā€œWeā€™re a Christian Reformed church with a Reformed worldview, but understanding that many of the new people who are comingā€”they just want a Christian church to be at,ā€ he said. ā€œBalancing their views of baptism and other stuff is an interesting situation. It requires a lot of patience. Iā€™m not going to pressure them to become Christians. Iā€™m just glad theyā€™re worshiping with us.ā€

Tebben reaches them the best way he knows how. ā€œWe preach a lot of grace,ā€ he said. ā€œMormons arenā€™t grace centered. To be able to enter a temple, a Mormon must have a temple recommendation, which is based on if they are deemed worthy or not. The best thing to talk about with a Mormon is Godā€™s grace, especially the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.ā€
