âby Academy Award-winning actor Matthew McConaughey sends a fresh message to children â and to âthe kid in us all.â
This charming and insightful book proves that âcontradictions are all around us. And they make us who we are.â
Take an early page: âJust because Iâve got skills, doesnât mean there is no luck.â Or a later page: âJust because I did it again, doesnât mean I donât regret it.â Or later still: âJust because they donât hear you, doesnât mean you have no voice.â Or my favorite, âJust because Iâm in the race, doesnât mean Iâm fully ready.â
Cadence rollicks through the wise axioms. In fact, it was apparently the cadences of singer Bob Dylan that coaxed the lines from McConaughey. In a recent New York Times interview, McConaughey explains, âI had a little ditty in my head. Iâd been listening to Bob Dylanâs âHighway 61 Revisited.â I woke up and I was like, I got a rhythm going here. I think I got something kind of cool.â
He heeded his muse, got up and wrote. âNext thing, Iâm up for hours and Iâve got 120 couplets.â
McConaugheyâs couplets coach us about life â whether weâre kids or not. Upon hearing a few of them, my therapist husband smiled and said, âHeâs breaking things out of black-and-white thinking.â
Agreed.
John Keats, too, might smile. This famous British poet would recognize what these couplets share: ânegative capability.â Keats coined this phrase in 1817 â an important phrase thatâs widened to mean our need to hold paradox well.
When journalist Sadie Stein asked the actor why a childrenâs book, McConaughey said, âParadox is a tough thing for a mind to grasp, not just a young mind.â
McConaugheyâs first book, Greenlights, published Oct. 2020, was a memoir articulating his life philosophy. Although it had its naysayers, it remained on the New York Times best-seller list for more than 55 weeks. And his new book? An utter delight. (Viking)
